Montessori Curriculum

Welcome to our Montessori Nursery Curriculum

Valentina Montessori provides a curriculum which promotes the Montessori philosophy. Learning will be achieved via a mixture of subjects, Montessori and topic based activities as well as structural and free play in all areas of the curriculum.

The children are initially shown how to work with the Montessori materials. The teacher will observe and then give them helpful assistance and encouragement when needed with their independent activities. The children will be provided with the opportunities to work/play as an individual and as part of a group. There will be group and individual teaching of the more formal work.

During the work cycle, the children choose their own activities from a wide range of materials, with guidance from the teachers only when necessary. This gives the children the freedom of choice in a prepared and structured environment. They have the opportunity to move around freely, either working at a table or on the floor.

There Are Five Classes In The Montessori Nursery School:
Baby Class 3 – 12 months old
Toddler Class 12 – 30 months old
Practical Life and Sensorial Class 2 – 3 years old
Math and Language Class 3 – 4 years old
Graduating class 4 – 5 years old

The Montessori method and materials provide an opportunity for all children to develop equally, independently and to help those with special educational needs.
They are able to be constructive with their time and to expand their range of skills, with some special attention to letters and numbers. Music and language classes complement the above activities.

Those who are ready will learn to read and write while in the Montessori section of the school and will move to our primary school at 5 doing simple mathematics. But there is no pressure on them to do so. Each child will work at his/her own pace whilst being encouraged to fulfill their individual potential and positive approach to learning.

We also aim to promote in our children positive attitude, enthusiasm and a sense of achievement, which in itself is conducive to independence and learning. We hope that each child will be encouraged to discover, explore, investigate and question as well as master new skills in an atmosphere of freedom and within an organized structure of warmth, care and happiness which will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

The school is well equipped with a wide range of Montessori materials – i.e. practical life and sensorial exercises, mathematical and language material, with books and other reading and writing resources, as well as cultural materials.

Lower school (Practical Life and Sensorial Class)
Lower school caters for children between 2 and 3 years. Children will have a gentle introduction to nursery routines during their daily play and learning activities. Each day there are opportunities for children to socially interact with each other developing their understanding of sharing and turn taking as part of a small group. Storytelling, music sessions and role play activities all promote good language and listening skills.

Upper school (Math and Language, Graduating Class)
At the age of three, children move into the preschool phase of their nursery education. Valentina uses the famous Montessori approach, aimed at achieving the correct balance of physical, social and intellectual stimulation for young children. Within a child centred environment, children can develop confidently at their own pace.

In upper school the class sizes are kept to no more than eight children to one teacher.
The materials used by the children within our Montessori nursery are carefully designed to allow personal development through investigation and sensorial stimulation, encouraging analytical skills, which can be channelled into all areas of life. All children’s progress is monitored and recorded regularly.
